ACF Awards 2008
Well the polls have closed - final auditing of the vote has commenced and the winner will be announced shortly, if you are too late to vote you can still learn about the entries below:
ONE: The reopened Wellington bridge. This historic bridge provides a useful cycle and pedestrian link across the Dee, between Ferryhill and Torry. Closed for several years, the city council has now restored the bridge to its former glory.
TWO: Becycle bike recycling and loan project. From a base at the university and run by enthusiastic volunteers, Becycle takes in donated bikes, restores them to good working order and puts them out for loan. Over ninety bikes are out and about in Aberdeen thanks to the efforts of this project. They even have an "open workshop" where you can work on your own bike, often with experieinced volounteers to help you learn!
THREE : Facilities for cyclists at Shell's Tullos site. These include 2 well used large cycle sheds catering for 120 bikes. Cyclists want cycle parking that is secure and fully covered and these at Shell fit the bill. Shower facilities are also provided. All encourage a healthy level of cycle commuting at Shell.
FOUR: S M Cycling Group Started this year by two 14 year old boys in Peterculter, with two main aims: to encourage young people to cycle more and to encourge people to cycle for good causes. The Group is aimed at 10 -16 year olds and is run by the young people themselves. Two charity cycle rides have been done this year with more planned with more cyclists next year.
FIVE: Extra wide cycle lanes through traffic islands . Several traffic islands along the recent extension of the North Deeside Rd cycle lane from Milltimber to Peterculter have been the first in the city to get the extra wide cycle lane treatment, helping cyclists as they pass through island 'pinch points'.
SIX; Facilities for cyclists at Aberdeen City Council. Secure and sheltered cycle storage near the main office in the city centre meets the standards that cyclists want. The council also has a bike pool to encourage cycle use for work trips.
